Last week was another engaging, insightful, and educational Esri User Conference. This year again needed to be held virtually, but the Cloudpoint team showed up in force to view and interact with the wonderful presenters and their timely topics. This year, we decided for our recap post to let employees that attended summarize some of what they saw and heard (and plan to implement right away):
“I thought Esri did an outstanding job of communicating the power of GIS technology and discussing latest trends. Most impressive presentation I saw was a city that was using artificial intelligence to perform vehicle counts, including recognition of the type of vehicle from video feeds received from their traffic cameras, all in real-time. Second best would be the use of indoor mapping technology to monitor social distancing within the office as large organizations return to the workplace.” - Jonathan Hodel, President
“Some of my biggest takeaways from the 2021 Esri UC was learning about all of the capabilities and functionalities of the New Map Viewer (that recently came out of Beta) for ArcGIS Online and Field Maps (which will be taking the place of Collector). Gaining helpful information on how to migrate to these new features will allow for ease of implementation when using them to ensure our clients have the best tools to manage their GIS data.” - Mike Genard, GIS Technician
“It is always good to get reminded of all that GIS can do since we mainly focus on local government. I wrote down 16 uses of GIS mentioned in the opening plenary session. There was a good overview of the Living Atlas. The Powerpoints attached to the presentations were useful. Some Raster Basemaps are now being moved into Mature Support (started in July 2021), as ESRI continues its transition to the less intensive, faster to draw, and more precise Vector basemaps. This was also the first that I heard about ESRI's Wayback Imagery program, which is sort of cool even though it only goes back to 2014. This seems to have been around for about 3 years now. It reminds me of the WaybackMachine!” - Sam Squillante, GIS Technician
“For Parcel Fabric Quality Driven Workflows, we got caught up on editing with topology, attribute rules, least squares adjustments, and various ArcGIS Pro editing tools.
I was introduced to the ArcGIS Fields Maps mobile app, current and future functionalities, and the Field Maps Web Designer. While Field Maps will feature the functionality of Collector, Explorer, and smart forms (and soon Workforce and Navigator), Survey 123 will not be folded into Field Maps and will remain its own mobile app.
In Field Apps: The Road Ahead, some of the main takeaways are:
1. Utility Network Tracing, Web Hook Support, and Workforce are coming to Field Maps
2. Quick Capture/ArcGIS Pro will incorporate a cool tool called Oriented Imagery, which provides the street-level perspective view from a photo of a feature that is clicked on in the map.” - Matt Junker, GIS Services Coordinator
“I saw some great examples of 3D Water Utilities.” - Tyler Severson, Field Technician
“Unfortunately I did not get to watch much of the conference, BUT I did watch the Airports SIG session on Thursday. I saw some amazing integration using Experience Builder to link Dashboards, Web App, Survey123 and Workforce. The solution was using all those apps together to allow airports to track Airfield Inspections, Work Orders, Wildlife Observations, and Land Lease data by harnessing data in ArcGIS Online as Hosted Feature Layers.” - Hunter Ray, GIS Analyst
