The Utility Network is an essential tool for managing complex utility systems, but for many organizations, its complexity can present a barrier to adoption. In response to customer feedback and evolving needs, Esri has introduced a series of updates aimed at simplifying the process of implementing and managing the Utility Network. These changes focus on making the model more accessible, ensuring organizations can get up and running quickly while still retaining the flexibility needed to meet their unique requirements.
In this blog post, we’ll recap the two key modifications highlighted in my recent webinar: The introduction of the Essentials Model within the Utility Network Foundation Solution and the new Utility Network Migration tools designed to simplify the migration process. We’ll also touch on additional tools, including the Attribute Assistant Toolbox prototype and the Create Utility Network Copy Workbook.
Foundation Solution Changes: Simplifying the Utility Network
The Foundation Solution has undergone several changes to simplify the process of implementing and migrating to the Utility Network. These changes aim to reduce the complexity of the system, offering a more streamlined and efficient approach to both setting up and migrating to the Utility Network model.
1. The Essentials Model: A Simplified Approach
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of the Essentials Model within the Utility Network Foundation Solution. This model is designed to offer a simplified version of the traditional Utility Network, focusing on core elements while removing some of the complexities that many organizations find overwhelming.
The Essentials Model is currently available for Water, Sewer, and Electric Unbalanced Distribution, and it significantly reduces the number of asset groups, asset types, and fields, making it easier for smaller utilities or organizations just getting started to implement the model. It provides a great starting point for those looking for a simpler, more accessible approach to utility management.
2. Streamlined Migration Tools
To complement the new model, Esri has introduced several simplified migration tools. These tools are designed to make it easier to map and migrate data into the Utility Network.
Create Simple Data Mapping: This tool simplifies the process of mapping asset groups and asset types by generating an Excel spreadsheet. It helps users easily define the relationships between source and target data, reducing the chances of error and streamlining the process.
Create Migration Workspace: This tool creates a data loading workspace compatible with ArcGIS Pro’s Data Loading tools. It automatically extends the schema, copies fields and attribute domains from the source data to the target, and prepares the workspace for a smooth data loading process. This reduces manual setup and ensures a more efficient workflow.
3. Documentation Move from Tasks to Online Help
Esri has also moved the Utility Network documentation from task-based instructions to a more comprehensive online help system. This shift allows users to find information more easily, with streamlined access to resources such as step-by-step guides, troubleshooting tips, and best practices for implementing and managing the Utility Network.
New Utility Network Migration Toolset
In addition to the Foundation Solution updates, Esri has introduced new Utility Network Migration tools, designed to simplify the process of transitioning existing GIS data to the Utility Network model. These tools provide a faster migration path with minimal changes, allowing organizations to adopt the Utility Network quickly. They are particularly helpful for customers with simpler requirements, providing them with a clear and easy route to evaluate their data in the context of the Utility Network.
The Utility Network Migration Toolset is available for download with ArcGIS Pro 3.3 and will be included in ArcGIS Pro 3.5. These tools allow for direct mapping of feature classes, fields, relationships, and annotations, providing an easier starting point for organizations migrating to the Utility Network.
In the near future, Esri plans to release a wizard interface to guide users through the migration process, making it even more user-friendly.
Additional Tools to Enhance Productivity
Esri has also introduced additional tools to improve workflows and productivity for Utility Network users.
Attribute Assistant Toolbox Prototype: This tool helps users who are unfamiliar with Arcade write essential attribute rules. It provides common rules for generating unique IDs, applying symbol rotation, and more, helping users automate workflows within the Utility Network.
Create Utility Network Copy Workbook: This tool generates an Excel workbook containing the properties of source and target Asset Packages. It helps users easily map asset groups, asset types, and network properties into the target Asset Package. This tool is particularly useful when migrating components of the Expanded Data Model to the Essentials Data Model, facilitating a smooth transition between models.
